Rachel slams PM over net zero U-turn
Rachel spoke out against Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s slowdown on environmental commitments.
Article in The Argus, September 2023:
“Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a major U-turn last week on the government’s climate pledges by delaying a ban on new fossil fuel cars and weakening plans to strip out polluting gas and oil boilers. He also scrapped policies forcing landlords to upgrade the energy efficiency of homes.
However, Rachel Millward, Green councillor and deputy leader of Wealden District Council, said she was “depressed and alarmed” by the move, which she described as “outrageous and nonsensical”.
Ms Millward, the Green Party’s candidate for Sussex Weald at the next general election, said: “It never fails to shock me that lying has become the new normal from the Conservative Party.
“Sunak claimed to be siding with ordinary families and throwing out oppressive and expensive environmental policies. The truth is those policies never existed in the first place.
“There was never a policy to tax meat, nor one to make us have seven bins, nor a policy forcing us to replace working boilers.
“Why would he make this up? Because he wants people to believe he is reasonable and on their side.
“Suggesting that the net zero policies are causing this unprecedented level of difficulty is outrageous and nonsensical. Policies that reduce carbon emissions are a win-win: for the people and the planet.”
She said that Wealden District Council remains “committed to leading the journey to net zero across the district”.
“We need a government that cares about communities and about nature and that tells the truth.”
